U.S. Airstrikes Target Islamic State in Somalia

On February 1, 2025, President Donald Trump announced that he had ordered U.S. military airstrikes targeting Islamic State (IS) positions in Somalia. The precision strikes focused on cave systems in the Golis Mountains of Puntland, a known stronghold for IS operatives. According to initial assessments, multiple IS members were killed, including a senior attack planner, with no reported civilian casualties.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed that the strikes were coordinated with the Somali government. Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud expressed gratitude for the continued U.S. support, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in combating terrorism.
The Islamic State’s presence in Somalia, though smaller compared to al-Shabab, has been a growing concern. Estimates suggest that IS-Somalia comprises between 300 to 700 active members. The group has been involved in various illicit activities, including kidnappings and militancy, aiming to expand its influence in the region.
This operation marks the first U.S. airstrike in Somalia during President Trump’s second term. It underscores the administration’s commitment to addressing terrorist threats and supporting allied nations in maintaining regional stability.
